What is Multiple Myeloma?
Multiple myeloma is a cancer of plasma cells. Normal plasma cells are found in the bone marrow and are an important part of the immune system. The immune system is made up of several types of cells that work together to fight infections and other diseases. Lymphocytes (lymph cells) are one of the main types of white blood cells in the immune system and include T cells and B cells. Lymphocytes are in many areas of the body, such as lymph nodes, the bone marrow, the intestines, and the bloodstream.
Less than 16 months after Kristina Mitchell had her third child, she was feeling like a typical, but worn-out, new mom. During a routine doctor appointment, Kristina opted to have all labs done which sparked the need for a bone marrow biopsy and ultimately changed the course of Kristinia’s life. On March 9th, 2018 Kristina was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma.
Multiple Myeloma is a cancer that forms in a type of white blood cell called a plasma cell. Plasma cells help you fight infections by making antibodies that recognize and attack germs. Multiple myeloma causes cancer cells to accumulate in the bone marrow, where they crowd out healthy blood cells. Fewer than 200,000 people per year are diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma and their average life expectancy is 4 years. Kristina is dedicated to winning this fight for her children.
